When do I need a dental check up?

Life can get busy and all of a sudden you realise you might have missed your last dental check up. Your dental health is important and can impact your overall health. So, how often do you really need a dental check-up? In Australia, it is recommended that individuals visit their dentist for a check-up at least once every six months. However, this may vary depending on individual needs and health conditions.

When to book your next dental check-up

For some individuals, more frequent dental visits may be necessary. Those with a history of gum disease or tooth decay may need to see their dentist more often, perhaps every three to four months. Pregnant women, smokers, and those with diabetes may also require more frequent check-ups to ensure their oral health is in good condition.

Regular dental check-ups are an important part of maintaining good oral health. By visiting your dentist at least twice a year, you can help prevent serious dental issues and ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy. If you have any concerns about your oral health or are experiencing pain or discomfort, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible.

Should children visit the dentist?

Children and teenagers should also visit the dentist regularly. Children’s teeth are still developing, and regular check-ups can help to identify any potential problems early on. Dentists can also provide advice on how to care for children’s teeth at home, and may recommend treatments such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants to help protect their teeth.

What happens during a check up?

During a dental check-up, a dentist will examine your teeth and gums, looking for any signs of decay, gum disease or other issues. They may also perform a professional cleaning to remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your teeth. Regular check-ups help to prevent these issues from developing into more serious problems, which can be more difficult and expensive to treat.

In addition to regular check-ups, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. This includes brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and eating a healthy diet low in sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
