What are the best dental habits to pick up in 2023?

With a new year, comes new resolutions for a better year ahead. It’s time to start looking after yourself and in particular, your dental health. Many patients either put off or couldn’t attend appointments throughout the pandemic. This has resulted in many people encountering problems with their teeth or gums, and increased anxiety around visiting the dentist. So 2023 is the year to get back to the dentist and pick up these important dental habits, and start taking care of yourself again.

Brush twice and day and make it count

It’s important to ensure you brush twice a day, morning and night, and for at least two minutes each time. And whilst it’s easy to start thinking about the day’s to-do list, it’s important to be mindful of how you are brushing, and ensuring you are brushing your teeth systematically. Start on one side, brushing at the back of your mouth and then moving to the front. Use curricular motions, on both your top and bottom sets of teeth, and then repeat this process on the opposite side.

And don’t forget to floss

Flossing and brushing your teeth go hand-in-hand. Flossing helps remove food and bacteria lodged in between your teeth, where your toothbrush just can reach. And it may come as a surprise, but it’s important to floss your teeth before brushing. This is key in maintaining good oral dental health and habits.

Protecting your teeth

If you play a contact sport, you must wear a mouthguard. A custom mouthguard protects each tooth evenly, and absorbs the impact of contact with your mouth and teeth.

And if you don’t play sport, it’s still important to be mindful of how you use your teeth and mouth. Don’t try and use your teeth to open bottles or jars. And steer clear of hard foods such as toffee, hard lollies and even ice. If you do break a tooth crunching down on hard food, you may need to have the tooth replaced.

Book regular visits to your dentist

If you missed your regular appointments in the past few years, or have never seen a dentist regularly, it’s not too late to start. Regular check ups are important for your teeth, as well as your gums and mouth, as your dental health can significantly impact your overall wellbeing. A visit to your family dentist is recommended every 6 to 12 months, but your dentist will suggest the best frequency for you and your family, depending on your oral health and needs.
