Twilight sedation can help your fear of the dentist

Going to the dentist can be intimidating for many people. You may have grown up with a fear of dentists or had a bad experience as a child or teenager. Anxiety can cause you to miss or cancel an appointment and in turn fail to maintain good oral health. This can lead to more serious health problems down the track. Fortunately, twilight sedation can significantly reduce that fear by alleviating stress and making you calmer throughout your treatment.

How does twilight sedation work?

Twilight sedation, also known as sleep dentistry or intravenous sedation, is administered through an IV by a dental sedationist and is practised by dentists all over the world. This safe and painless technique puts fearful patients at ease as you enter a dream-like state during your procedure — whether it be for teeth fillings, crowns and bridges, dental implants or other surgery.

Why choose twilight sedation?

This process supports anyone who is concerned about going to the dentist, especially if you:

  • have a fear or anxiety of dentists, doctors or hospitals.
  • have had negative dental experiences in the past.
  • experience teeth or gum sensitivity, or gag reflexes.
  • struggle to be still for extended periods.

It can also be used during complicated dental procedures, such as a teeth extraction. Surgeries like these can be worrying for some. You may find yourself sweating or short of breath but remember, our dentists and experienced staff are here to prioritise your safety and comfort.

What can I expect from twilight sedation?

When treated with twilight sedation, you’ll feel calm and relaxed for the entire process of your dental visit, with a dosage specified to your needs. However, despite being able to understand and follow instructions, you’ll have no memory of the procedure. It’s important to organise someone to drive you home, as the sedative can remain in your system for up to 24 hours.
