Dental X-rays

– – – – –

At Gosford Family Dentist, X-rays are an important part of our holistic approach to dental care. Below are some of the most common X-ray questions we receive.

Why Are X-Rays Used?
Dental X-rays provide us valuable diagnostic information about your dental health. They help to detect any problems not visible to the naked eye.

How Frequently Should X-Rays Be Taken?
At your first visit to Gosford Family Dentist, we review your medical and dental history and conduct a thorough examination. This helps us determine if you need an X-ray. In healthy individuals, we recommend an X-ray every two years.

Patients with frequent dental problems may need X-rays more often. If you’ve had dental X-rays taken by your previous dentist within the past two years, copies may be requested with your consent to get a clear picture of your dental health history.

Are X-Rays Safe?
Yes, they are safe. The most common patient concern regarding X-rays is the level of radiation exposure. In actuality, dental X-rays expose the patient to an extremely low level of radiation.

This level can be compared to the same amount of radiation anyone would encounter naturally over a few days.

Are X-Rays Safe for Pregnant Women?
Yes. There are measures we take to keep both mother and baby safe.

If an X-ray is required for a pregnant woman, a leaded apron is used to ensure that mother and baby are shielded from too much radiation exposure.

An untreated dental infection can often pose a threat to an unborn child, and an X-ray is necessary to determine the best treatment.

What if I’m Trying to Get Pregnant or Breastfeeding?
X-rays are completely safe for women trying to get pregnant or those who are breastfeeding. The X-rays do not need to be postponed under these circumstances. If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding X-rays and how they relate to your safety, we encourage you to let us know.
