How to strengthen teeth and boost your oral health

Maintaining strong teeth is essential for overall health and wellbeing. At Gosford Family Dentists, we are committed to helping you to achieve optimal oral health. Here are six strategies on how to strengthen teeth and make them more resilient.

1. Floss once a day

We all know that we should be brushing our teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, but do you floss daily? Flossing is fundamental to maintaining strong teeth. Ensure to floss at least once a day to remove plaque and prevent decay. This routine helps protect your enamel and keeps your teeth healthy.

2. Use fluoride mouthwash

Fluoride mouthwash is an effective addition to your oral hygiene routine, helping to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities. By reaching areas that may be missed by brushing alone, it provides an extra layer of defence against acid attacks from plaque, bacteria, and sugary foods. Regular use can aid in remineralising weakened enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. To maximise its benefits, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash once a day, preferably after brushing and flossing.

3. Maintain a balanced diet

A diet rich in calcium and phosphorus supports strong teeth. Dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, and lean meats are excellent choices. Limiting sugary and acidic foods can also prevent enamel erosion.

4. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps wash away food particles and stimulates saliva production, which neutralises acids and protects your teeth. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily for optimal dental health.

5. Avoid teeth grinding

Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding, is a condition that can gradually weaken your teeth and lead to a range of dental issues, including enamel erosion, increased sensitivity, and even fractures. Many people grind or clench their teeth unconsciously, particularly during sleep, making it difficult to control. If left untreated, bruxism can also contribute to jaw pain, headaches, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. To protect your teeth from excessive wear and potential damage, consider using a mouthguard designed to cushion and absorb the pressure caused by grinding. Custom-fitted mouthguards, provided by your dentist, offer the best protection and comfort, as they are tailored to fit your bite precisely.

6. Regular dental check-ups and cleans

Visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleans allows for early detection of potential issues and removes tartar build-up on your teeth. Contact Gosford Family Dentists today to schedule your appointment and take the first step towards stronger teeth.
