Gosford Family Dentist provides a range of restorative dental treatments including teeth fillings, veneers, dental crowns and dental bridges. Crowns and bridges are both fixed prosthetic devices that, unlike removable dental appliances, are bonded to existing teeth and can only be removed by your dentist.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are a fixed covering over an individual tooth. Crowns are available in a variety of materials, including composite resin and porcelain.

Crowns are recommended when a tooth is severely discoloured, has multiple fractures, is prone to fracture after root canal therapy, or if a filling takes up more than two-thirds of the tooth’s structure. A crown may also be recommended if a tooth functions as anchorage for a dental bridge.

What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges, also known as a fixed partial prosthetics, are ceramic structures that span the gap left by missing or extracted teeth and are permanently bonded to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

There are four types of dental bridges:

  1. Traditional bridges. Traditional bridges consist of one or more artificial teeth bonded to dental crowns on both sides of the gap that they span.
  2. Cantilever bridges. Cantilever bridges are only supported on one side.
  3. Implant-supported bridges. Implant-supported bridges are supported by dental implants instead of dental crowns.
  4. Resin-bonded bridges. Resin-bonded bridges are held in place by a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth.

What are the benefits of dental crowns and bridges?

With proper dental care, your teeth can last a lifetime but some wear is inevitable. Dental crowns and bridges offer significant benefits by helping to preserve your natural teeth and restore normal dental functions.

By encasing a tooth with a dental crown, you’re restoring the look of your natural tooth and protecting it from further wear. Dental crowns can delay or even prevent the need for a tooth extraction.

A dental bridge can restore your normal biting and chewing actions, and eliminate any changes that gaps between your teeth may have made to your speech. And you may find that your confidence returns to your smile.

At Gosford Family Dentist, we can design and produce dental restorations that match the shape and colour of your existing teeth in a single appointment. This reduces the potential discomfort of additional treatments and saves you time and money.
