A dental check-up and clean at Gosford Family Dentist is an important part of your dental care routine. During an initial check-up, we use an intra-oral camera to perform a comprehensive examination of your mouth. We check your teeth for decay, review existing dental work, check your gums for signs of disease, and we screen your mouth for oral cancer and other oral diseases. We also answer any questions you may have about your dental care or dental treatments that you may need now or in the future.

Check-up treatments

After the initial examinations have been conducted, your dentist will then complete a series of treatments.

Scale and clean

A scale and clean will remove the build-up from your teeth that remains even after regular brushing at home. This build-up is a combination of plaque and tartar. By removing it, you’ll reduce the likelihood of gum disease and tooth decay. Your dentist will also polish your teeth to remove superficial stains.

Fluoride treatment

Your dentist will usually include a fluoride treatment after your scale and clean. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays an important role in strengthening teeth and protecting them against acid attack or dental decay.

Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that helps your dentist detect problems in locations that are not readily visible, such as between teeth, beneath existing fillings, and below the line of your gums.

A dental X-ray can help detect tooth decay and tumours, cysts, and bone loss. It can also show tooth and root positions, which may be used to aid other dental treatments. To maintain good dental health, we recommend a dental X-ray every two years.

How often should I have a dental check-up?

We recommend a dental check-up every six months because regular examination can help with the early diagnosis of dental problems.
