Professional teeth whitening vs teeth whitening kit

A bright, white smile is something we all would love to have. With numerous store-bought teeth whitening products it’s tempting to take a DIY approach to teeth whitening. However, there are significant advantages to seeking professional treatment from a qualified dentist. Let’s explore the differences between professional teeth whitening and store-bought teeth whitening products.

What is professional teeth whitening?

Over time, your teeth can become dull, discoloured, or stained from eating certain foods, drinking beverages such as coffee and red wine, or smoking. Age-related structural changes in our teeth can also cause colour changes.

Professional teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure performed by a qualified dentist that can lighten the colour of your teeth, enhance your smile, and restore confidence in your appearance. This process typically involves using high-concentration bleaching agents, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to remove stains and discolouration from your teeth. The treatment is tailored to your specific needs and can be completed in a single visit or over several sessions.

What are store-bought whitening products?

Store-bought whitening products include a variety of solutions like whitening strips, gels, toothpaste, and mouth rinses. These products are readily available at pharmacies and supermarkets and they contain much lower concentrations of bleaching agents compared to professional treatments. They’re designed for at-home use and typically require daily application over a few weeks to see noticeable results.

Is teeth whitening safe?

When teeth whitening treatment is conducted under the supervision of a dentist, because they are trained professionals, they can ensure that your gums and soft tissue are protected correctly from the strong bleaching agents used. This minimises the risk of irritation or damage after treatment. At Gosford Family Dentist, we can also tailor your treatment to address your specific needs. This personalised approach ensures optimal results, often achieving a noticeable improvement in just one session.

Store-bought teeth whitening products are designed for the general population and lack the customisation that professional treatments offer. While generally safe when used as directed, store-bought products carry a higher risk of misuse without professional guidance, potentially causing tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. The results after application are often less dramatic and shorter-lasting due to the lower concentration of bleaching agents in the products.

What professional teeth whitening treatments are there?

In-chair whitening

At Gosford Family Dentist, we use Zoom WhiteSpeed for our in-chair teeth whitening appointments. This is the quickest and easiest way to create a brighter, healthier smile, and is clinically proven to whiten teeth up to eight shades in one appointment

At-home whitening

We can also make custom trays and prescribe you with whitening gel that allows you to achieve great results at a more affordable price and in the comfort of your own home. Results are not instant like our in-chair whitening, but when used correctly and for a regular period of time, at-home whitening can return results just as bright and white as our in-chair whitening treatment.
