Expert advice from a kids’ dentist: 5 steps to healthy teeth

Tips for Healthy Teeth

As a parent, you juggle many responsibilities. From pediatrician visits to vaccinations, it can be easy to overlook a trip to the kids’ dentist. However, ensuring regular dental checkups is crucial for your child’s overall health. Tooth decay remains the most common dental issue among Australian children, often exacerbated by sugary foods and drinks. Poor dental health can significantly impact children’s speech, jaw development, and overall wellbeing. Unfortunately, one in three children neglect to brush twice daily as recommended.

Give your child a head start on their oral health. Here are our top five tips for maintaining healthy teeth:

1. Monitor your child’s tooth development

As reported by NSW Health, babies can begin teething as early as three months old, with their first teeth appearing around six to nine months. By the age of one, a baby may have up to eight teeth. Start cleaning your baby’s teeth as soon as they become visible using a soft damp face washer or finger brush. Regularly check your child’s mouth for any changes, such as a white band along the gumline or brown spots on teeth, which could indicate tooth decay.

2. Prepare for their first dentist visit

The Australian Dental Association advises that children visit a kids’ dentist when their first baby tooth appears or by the age of 12 months, whichever comes first. During this initial visit, the dentist will ensure proper tooth development and check for any signs of decay. As a parent, your attitude towards dental visits can greatly influence your child’s perception. Promote the dentist as a positive experience to help foster good dental habits for life. Ensuring that you have the right dentist to suit your family is important so everyone is comfortable, so do your research beforehand.

3. Encourage healthy eating and drinking

Children require frequent snacks to maintain their energy levels. While pre-packaged foods are convenient, ensuring a diet low in sugar and processed foods is vital for strong and healthy teeth. Drinking lots of water throughout the day is also important. In Australia, fluoride is added to tap water making it an excellent choice over some filtered water to help prevent tooth decay.

4. Maintain good dental habits

From 18 months, introduce a small amount of low-fluoride toothpaste with a soft-bristled brush. Brush your child’s teeth using small circular motions after meals and before bedtime. This practice strengthens enamel and prevents decay. By the age of seven, encourage your child to brush and floss independently with supervision. Remind them not to swallow the toothpaste!

5. Make dental hygiene fun

Getting kids to brush their teeth can be challenging. Invest in a colourful toothbrush, natural-flavoured toothpaste, or play their favourite song to make brushing more enjoyable. For infants, The Wiggles can encourage this twice daily activity. And for older children, try using apps such as Brush Up or Colgate Brushing Adventure.
