Invisalign: is it right for me?

Do you wish you had straighter teeth but hate the idea of getting braces as an adult? You’re not alone. In the past, if you wanted to straighten your teeth, traditional fixed braces (the metal looking ones that stick out and cause irritation in your mouth) were the only option. But today, at Gosford Family Dentist, our Invisalign aligners are putting smiles on our patient’s faces. Read on to find out why.

What are Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign aligners are clear customised guards that fit tightly over your teeth to guide them into position over time. They’re made from BPA-free plastic, so there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate your lips and gums. And, because they’re practically invisible, most people won’t notice that you’re wearing them. This makes Invisalign a popular choice for adults and image-conscious teens.

One of the key benefits to Invisalign aligners is that they’re removable. That means that when you’re attending a social event, eating, or brushing your teeth, you can simply take them out. Unlike braces, which limit your teeth from biting into certain foods such as fruit, you can eat what you like and keep up your usual oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing. This makes them a flexible solution for people with busy lives.

How do Invisalign aligners work?

In your first consultation, your dentist will take 3D images or plaster impressions of your teeth and mouth. We send the impressions/scan to an Invisalign lab where technicians, in concert with our team, digitally map out the desired movement of your teeth during treatment.

Invisalign aligners are customised for your mouth so they’ll fit comfortably. The aligners sit tightly over your teeth and apply pressure to gently move your teeth. Over a series of appointments, your dentist will monitor your progress and, as your teeth begin to move, they will fit your next set of aligners to gradually guide your teeth into their desired position.

If you follow your treatment plan closely, you’ll benefit from fast, long-lasting results.

Is Invisalign the best choice for me? Ask your dentist.

Although Invisalign may sound like the perfect solution for straightening your teeth, it’s best to first visit Gosford Family Dentists for a consultation to discuss your suitability.
