How can I afford the dental care I need?

Many Australians are currently reassessing their budgets due to the high cost of living. Whilst a trip to the dentist can seem expensive, the longer you leave an issue, the worse it can get and therefore cost you more in the long run. But there are other ways. Did you know there is a variety of payment options so you can get the dental care you need now?

So if you’re feeling the squeeze, but need to see the dentist, take a look at some of the other payment options available.

Private Health Insurance

Have you checked what’s included in your private health insurance? Often people don’t realise what dental cover they have included, and this could really save you a lot of money next time you’re in the chair. Most dentists will offer HICAPS which stands for “Health Industry Claims and Payments Service”. This is an electronic system that healthcare providers, including dentists, can use to process your private health insurance and Medicare claims on the spot, and often with little or no gap, depending on your level of cover.

Gosford Family Dentist also provides dental services as part of the HCF More for Teeth program. If you’re an HCF member with extras cover, you may be eligible to claim back 100% (subject to your annual limits and any waiting periods) on a range of preventative dental services, including:

  • 1 or 2 check-ups per calendar year.
  • Scale and clean.
  • Fluoride treatment.
  • Mouthguards.
  • Panoramic radiograph (OPG).

So it’s worth investigating what you have included and speaking with your dentist about how to maximise your health insurance.

Government funded dental schemes

You may be eligible for Government funded dental care. To discuss your eligibility and the dental services available to you, contact us or call Gosford Family Dentist on (02) 4325 3221. Some examples of Government funded dental schemes include:

  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) – The DVA provides eligible patients with financial support for general and preventative dental treatments approved by the department. In most cases, you will have no out-of-pocket expenses for dental treatments. However, annual caps do apply and you may be required to pay some out-of-pocket expenses for certain high-cost treatments such as some bridges and crowns. You can find out more from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs
  • Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) – The CDBS is a Medicare initiative that allows eligible children aged 2-17 years, access to basic dental services, including teeth cleaning, X-rays, teeth fillings, fissure sealing, root canal therapy and teeth extractions. The CDBS does not cover orthodontic work or cosmetic dentistry. Eligible children will have access to a benefit cap of up to $1,013 over a period of two calendar years. Visit the Government’s CDBS website to confirm if your child is eligible.

Buy Now Pay Later Options

You might know about Buy Now Pay Later options for your retail shopping, but did you know you can also use them at the dentist? With interest free options, and either fortnightly or flexible repayments, this can be a good choice if you know you’ll have the funds later, but need the work done now. This is especially helpful in emergency dental situations

Most people don’t know that you can apply for early release of your superannuation to pay for dental surgery, dental implants, and a range of other treatments. Through SuperCare you can apply to access your super to pay for your, your partner’s or your children’s treatment. You may choose to apply for funding to cover the entire cost of the procedure or part of the cost.

With SuperCare, important dental care is now within reach for more Australians who are feeling the effects of the cost of living.

Payment options are available to help you and your family receive the dental care you need.
