Should you brush your teeth before or after breakfast? While both options exist, there’s one that provides better enamel protection and removes bacterial biofilm created overnight. Here are some considerations before deciding which option is better for your oral health.
Why is brushing your teeth before breakfast recommended?
We recommend brushing your teeth as soon as you wake up in the morning because it provides the most protection for your teeth. Saliva production naturally cleanses your teeth throughout the day, but it slows down overnight, which allows bacteria to build up while you sleep, creating what we know as “morning breath”. Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste when you first wake up removes this bacterial biofilm. It also coats your teeth in fluoride, which protects your enamel when it’s exposed to food and acids throughout the day.
Can brushing your teeth after eating be effective?
Starting your day with acidic foods like fruit juice or coffee temporarily softens your enamel. This means brushing your teeth immediately afterwards can actually scrub away enamel, increasing sensitivity over time. This routine can cause more harm than good, and we don’t recommend it.
What if you prefer brushing after breakfast?
Before brushing, we suggest waiting at least 30 minutes after eating breakfast to give your saliva time to neutralise any acids and reharden your enamel. Rinsing your mouth with water or a fluoride mouthwash directly after eating will aid in reducing acid and sugar buildup while you wait to brush.
Morning routines for great oral health
Choosing the best time to brush your teeth is important, but there are other things to consider in your daily routine to ensure your teeth stay healthy. Make sure you’re brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and staying hydrated throughout the day to support saliva production.
