6 tips to maintain gum health

Did you know that poor gum health leads to the development of gum disease which is quite common in Australia. In fact, 30 per cent of adults experience mild to severe gum disease. So, to keep your gums healthy, we’ve listed 6 of Dr Jake Jang’s top tips to keep your gums healthy. 

1. Brush your teeth well

Brushing your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes each time, removes plaque and food trapped between your teeth and gums. Dr Jake Jang recommends that you swap out your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months to maintain quality and ensure your teeth are being cleaned properly with each use. 

2. Floss daily

Food and plaque can build up between your teeth and on your teeth enamel. This build up can harbour bacteria, and when ignored can trigger the development of gum disease. Flossing at least once a day reduces and removes plaque and food that’s beyond the reach of your toothbrush. It’s an important step many people forget, but once you make it part of your daily routine your teeth (and dentist!) will thank you for it. 

3. Use the right toothpaste and mouthwash

Many toothpaste brands claim to reduce gingivitis, but how do you know which toothpaste to trust? Toothpaste containing fluoride helps fight bacteria that harm both your teeth and gums so it’s our recommended choice when picking a toothpaste. 

When it comes to mouthwash, make sure you choose a therapeutic mouthwash. Whilst cosmetic mouthwashes temporarily reduce bad breath, they don’t contain the necessary ingredients for long-lasting bacterial reduction. 

4. Limit sugary, sticky, or starchy foods 

Consider your diet. By limiting your intake of sugary, sticky, and starchy foods, you’re well on your way to avoiding tooth decay. Tooth decay is caused by a combination of food debris and bacteria left in your mouth that takes hold as plaque forms on your gum. If left untreated, tooth decay can cause inflammation of your gums leading to infection. 

5. Eliminate cigarettes and tobacco

The Better Health Channel reveals that smokers – cigarettes and vapes – are at a much higher risk of developing gum disease than those who don’t. This is because smoking weakens your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off a gum infection. And if you’ve developed gum disease, continuing to smoke makes it more difficult for your gums to heal. 

6. Visit your trusted family dentist for regular checkups 

Your dentist can detect early signs of gum disease, and help you care for your teeth and gums. Dr Jake Jang recommends seeing your dentist every 6 months, or more regularly if you have any concerns.
