Dental Implants

– – – – –

A dental implant is titanium “root” placed directly into the jaw bone. Once integrated with your bone, it can be used to support a crown, bridge or secure a complete denture.

Implants have now been used for more than 30 years, and have a high success rate. Dental implants are an excellent option to replace one or more missing teeth.

There are some extraordinary benefits to implants, including:

  • Improved appearance – Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. They preserve surrounding bone, and support your lip and facial profile.
  • Improved speech – Poor fitting dentures can slip deeper into your mouth and cause your speech to slur.
  • Improved function – Implants can withstand a higher bite force. Implants do not move while eating.
  • Improved comfort – Moving dentures make chewing difficult.
  • Improved oral hygiene – Prevents tipping or drifting of adjacent teeth, making the surrounding area easier to clean.
  • Increased longevity – Dental implants can last many years, often longer than bridges or dentures, if properly maintained.

At Gosford Family Dentist, we use the latest radiographic planning methods to ensure the best results. By undertaking a thorough cosmetic and structural analysis of your teeth and facial features, we can deliver a fully aesthetic and functional outcome.

We understand that dental emergencies can be unpredictable. Whether you broke a filling or have all the symptoms of an infection, it’s important to know you have access to professional dental care when you need it the most.

You can find comfort in knowing that Gosford Family Dentist is on call should you have any type of dental emergency. If you are in pain, simply contact our friendly reception staff and we will slot you in immediately.

In the meantime, here are some actions you can take if you’re not able to get to the dentist office right away:

  • Lost tooth – Try to see the dentist immediately to ensure that long term damage doesn’t occur.
  • Toothache – Take a pain killer, and avoid foods that are sugary, hot, or cold in order to minimize pain.
  • Sore gums or ulcers – Gargle with salt water and swirling it around affected areas. This helps to kill bacteria and minimize infection before you see the dentist.
  • Lost filling or crown – Take a pain killer. If you still have the filling or crown, please bring it with to the dentist in case we need it during treatment.
  • If you are unsure of whether your situation constitutes a dental emergency, please contact our friendly staff for assistance.

Tooth Extractions

– – – – –

Patients with broken or significantly damaged teeth may receive a recommendation for tooth removal or dental extraction.

Generally speaking, there are many reasons a patient may need a dental extraction, which include:

  • Having extra teeth that are blocking other teeth from emerging.
  • The arrival of wisdom teeth.
  • The placement of braces.

Extractions can vary from simple to surgical. Simple extractions involve the removal of the tooth in a single piece.

In a surgical extraction, the dentist may need to cut the tooth into smaller pieces prior to removal. This typically occurs if the tooth is already broken, or if the tooth has not yet erupted.

In all circumstances, we will provide you with the necessary pain relievers and proper care to ensure that you are in comfort during the procedure. You can typically expect to feel some pressure during an extraction, although pain should not be present.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to come through in our mouth, and because of this, there is often little space for them to grow. They often become wedged or impacted at the back of the jaw.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause:

  • Decay and infection – It is often difficult to clean around them because of the tight space.
  • Sore throat – Your wisdom teeth can be the source of constant infections at the back of your mouth.
  • Bad breath or taste – Your wisdom teeth can be a food trap around the gums.
  • Mouth ulcers – Wisdom teeth consistently grind up against the inside of your cheeks.
  • Cyst formation – Wisdom teeth can form a cyst that destroys the surrounding bone.
  • Crooked teeth – Wisdom teeth push against surrounding teeth, and often cause them to grow crooked.

At Gosford Family Dentist, wisdom teeth removal is a routine dental procedure. We offer “happy gas” and “sleep dentistry” (a level IV dentistry sedation) to relieve anxiety and create a comfortable experience.

We can let you know at your next check up if your wisdom teeth may need to be extracted. Contact us today.

Root Canal Therapy

– – – – –

If the nerve inside your tooth becomes infected or injured, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth. Root canal therapy is the process of removing the infected nerve.

If left untreated, the infection can spread to adjacent teeth, other parts of the mouth, or even cause life threatening complications. The root canals are carefully cleaned, disinfected, shaped and then filled with a rubber-based material to prevent re-infection.

Once it is clear the root canal has been a success, a permanent crown is recommended to seal the tooth and allow you to function normally.

Root canal therapy may be necessary if you exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold foods.
  • Pain in the tooth while biting or chewing.
  • Abscess or boil on the gums.
  • Severe toothache made worse at night.
  • Silent, chronic infection only detected on X-rays.

Dr. Jang has extensive knowledge and experience performing root canal procedures. Sometimes the procedure is spread over two visits, and in most cases it is under one hour long.

Contact us today if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. It is important to quickly see a dentist to minimize pain and further damage.

Invisalign offers you the opportunity to straighten your teeth without the hassle of traditional fixed braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth without any wires or brackets.

Invisalign aligners are:

  • Invisible – The aligners are clear, so hardly anyone will notice you’re straightening your teeth.
  • Comfortable – There are no metal brackets or wires to irritate your gums.
  • Removable – Invisalign aligners can be removed to eat, drink, or for special occasions.
  • Oral hygiene – Invisalign allows you to brush and floss normally during treatment.
  • Customized – The aligners are individually customized to fit your mouth.
